Michael Salmon's incredible journey: A late bloomer's tale
Michael Salmon, a late bloomer, joined the Deaf Football Australia (DFA) team in 2018. DFA Technical Director, James Lambert, recalls reviewing website inquiries and noticing Michael's interest. From the very first day, Michael fit in effortlessly with the boys and became an integral part of the team.
From the South Coast of Sydney, Michael grew up playing for local clubs and has always had a passion for football. He hails from the lovely Shoalhaven region, where he enjoys the relaxed lifestyle, close proximity to stunning beaches, and lush bushland, often spending time with his wife and their two deaf dogs. Michael played for Camden Falcons from age 8 to 30. He started playing first grade from the age of 19, but when he lost his hearing at 27 he found it difficult to compete and an adjustment period was needed. Michael moved to Macarthur for a few seasons while trying to adjust to hearing loss and to improve his balance which was impacted when he lost his hearing. Michael today plays for Shoalhaven FC and is still loving his football.
Michael is a valuable asset to any team he plays for. His strong work ethic and dedication to putting in the effort are matched by his exceptional teamwork and unwavering support for his fellow players. As a skilled and versatile defender, Michael is comfortable playing on either side of the defense. His disciplined approach to one-on-one defending and his astute understanding of the game make him a formidable opponent.
Initially, Michael contacted DFA with the hope of watching the team play. However, his journey took an unexpected turn as he was presented with the opportunity to train with talented players. This led to an incredible moment when he represented Australia at a World Cup stage, an astounding achievement 29 years after he first started playing football.
Looking ahead, Michael's aspirations extend beyond his playing career. He hopes to stay involved with DFA even when he can no longer play, lending his support to the talented players already in the squad and potentially mentoring future generations. Furthermore, DFA has provided Michael with a unique opportunity to connect with other deaf people. He lacked a connection to the deaf community before joining DFA. Now, he embraces this connection and values the camaraderie and understanding he has found among his teammates and fellow deaf individuals.
