At just sixteen years of age, Maxi joined Deaf Football Australia (DFA) with the unwavering support of his mother, Melanie. Notably, during his tenure with DFA, Maxi maintained an impeccable record of attendance, never missing a single camp, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport.


One of the significant challenges Maxi encountered over the years was the absence of another goalkeeper with whom to train and compete. Despite this obstacle, he maintained his motivation and passion for playing for Deaf Football Australia. Renowned for his cheerful demeanor, Maxi effortlessly integrated into the squad, quickly becoming a beloved member of the team.


Maxi's debut occurred in 2019 when the team engaged in a friendly match with Blacktown Districts Association Ponds FC. In 2023, Maxi showcased his exceptional skills at the World Championship in Malaysia, participating in a total of seven games. While the team faced challenges, Maxi remained resilient, consistently performing at his best and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the tournament. The transition from competing against local teams in Australia to facing formidable opponents in England, Germany, and Turkey proved a significant challenge.


Maxi Shanahan stands as an exemplary athlete who has overcome obstacles and achieved remarkable success in the world of Deaf Football. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, demonstrating the power of determination, perseverance, and the unwavering support of loved ones.


Reflecting on the World Cup in Malaysia, Maxi expressed his enthusiasm for the experience, highlighting the opportunity to test the team's mettle against formidable opponents and the pride in securing an overall 12th place finish. He acknowledged the tournament's preparation as a collective effort and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect with players from other countries, gaining insights into their journeys and experiences.
